Involves reducing a TiO2-FeO-CaO-CaF2 melt using ferrosilicon in an
electric furnace.
Produces Fe-Ti-Si, Si-Ca-Ti, and other composite alloys.
By adding other oxides or ferroalloys, various multi-component
titanium composite alloys can be produced.
Carbon-Thermal Reduction:
Involves using coke as a reducing agent and lime as a flux in a
small electric furnace.
Produces high-carbon ferrotitanium with high levels of titanium,
carbon, silicon, and aluminum.
To reduce carbon content, silica can be added to the charge.
By adding alumina, Ti-Al-Si-Fe composite alloys can be produced.
